Email reporting shows what happened to the emails you've sent from Hook, including whether they were delivered and how recipients engaged with them.
What each status means
Delivered (coming soon) - The recipient's email server accepted the email. This confirms it reached their mail system, but not that it landed in their inbox, as it may have been filtered into spam or another folder.
Bounced (coming soon) - The email couldn't be delivered. Common reasons include an invalid or misspelled address, a full mailbox, or the recipient's server rejecting the message.
Opened - An invisible tracking image in the email was loaded. This usually means the email was viewed.
Clicked - A link in the email was clicked. Links are tracked by routing them through a tracking address before taking the reader to the original destination.
Replied - Someone replied in the same email thread.
How accurate is this data?
Delivered and bounced statuses are reliable. Opens, clicks and replies are useful signals, but they aren't perfect.
These limitations aren't specific to Hook. Every email platform, from sales tools to marketing software, tracks opens and clicks the same way, using a tracking image for opens and tracked links for clicks. You'll see the same limitations in any email reporting tool.
Why an email might show as not opened when it was read
Tracking was turned off. If tracking wasn't enabled when the email was sent, opens and clicks can't be recorded.
Images were blocked. Many email clients and company networks block images by default. If the tracking image doesn't load, the open isn't recorded.
The email was viewed as plain text. Plain text emails can't contain a tracking image, so opens can't be recorded for recipients who read emails in plain text.
The reply was sent separately. Replies are only tracked in the same thread. If someone responds in a new email or from a different address, it may not show as replied.
Why an email might show as opened or clicked when it wasn't read
Automatic image loading. Some email providers, such as Apple Mail with Mail Privacy Protection, load images automatically before the recipient looks at the email.
Security scanning. Corporate security tools often scan emails and links to check they're safe. This can register as an open or click, sometimes seconds after delivery.
Preview panes. In some email clients, scrolling past an email in the preview pane can register as an open.
Opens and clicks aren't tied to a specific person
Tracking is attached to the email, not to an individual. If an email was sent to several people, including anyone on CC or BCC, or was forwarded on, an open or click shows that someone engaged with it, but not necessarily who.
Tips for reading your reporting
Treat open rates as a directional indicator rather than an exact figure.
Clicks and replies are more reliable signals of genuine engagement than opens.
For the clearest tracking, email contacts individually rather than in a group.
If you see an unusually high number of bounces, check your contact data for outdated or incorrect addresses.
